A recent post over on Carolyn Jewel’s blog really got me thinking. Her blog is in response to other blog posts and comments but it ultimately boils down to readers wanting great books for free.
There, I said it.
Free, free, free. We all want everything for free!
And who doesn’t love free? I love free. I’ll admit it. I love free fonts, free photos, free artwork, free food, free books. I’m pretty fond of a good 50% off sale too. And 90% off, well, heck. That’s almost free!
So in this world of free Iphone apps and free gift with purchase is there any hope for authors who just want to eek out a living? Or do the majority of readers think that books should be cheaper? Or free-er?
Does all this free stuff make us, as a society, value free stuff? Do we still find value in things we must buy? And how long will we be willing to buy it? Will there come a day were if it’s not on hulu.com we won’t watch it? If a book doesn’t come from the library or a torrent, we won’t read it?
Is there just that much content out there that we feel we have so many options that paying for something is out of the question?
